A rare and characterful piece of English country chair-making, this Georgian period elm ladderback armchair dates to circa 1800 and has survived over two centuries with its original rush seat intact — a remarkable thing in itself. The woven rush seat remains serviceable and structurally sound, with the natural patina of age that no reproduction can replicate.
The frame is ebonised elm with a rich dark finish, the natural warm grain of the elm breaking through at the arms and wear points. Three shaped and scalloped ladder-back rails give the chair its elegant silhouette, while the beautifully turned bobbin arm supports and heavily turned front stretcher speak to the skill of the original craftsman. A proper fireside chair — wide, low-seated, and built to last.
Honest antique condition throughout. The ball feet show age-related splitting consistent with 225 years of use — stable and structurally sound, but noted for transparency. No restoration, no repainting — entirely original.
